I have so much love for and faith in the Chocolate and Zucchini blog that when Alice requested “something with chocolate” I immediately found what I was looking for in C&Z: this recipe for a chocolate cake (baked in a bain marie!) with an extra bit of deliciousness at the top.
I have not officially tasted this cake, but I did sneak a chunk of chocolaty goodness when I prematurely transferred the cake onto a plate and large bits stuck to the pan. Results? Soft, really moist, and so good.
Had to fudge a few minor details: ran out of granulated sugar so used some brown; ran out of dark chocolate so threw about 2 oz of white in there, and my baking time was something like 45 minutes to an hour (this seems to happen when I use bain maries; the flan I made before also took forever, though that was in a different oven.) Also threw in some instant espresso powder for good luck and possibly general flavor enhancement (?).
So since this cake was made at Alice’s request I’ll wait a little longer before tasting; stay tuned for a report!
PS. What is the best way to transport and small and fairly fragile cake?

I’m guessing you don’t have a Cake Taker, huh? I try to find my largest plastic container and nestle the cake, on a plate, in it. OR, I take a springform pan ring that’s larger than the width of the cake, set it on the plate, and wrap the whole thing in layers of aluminum foil. This holds the springform ring in place, and since it’s both taller than the cake and wider than it, nothing comes in contact with the pretty cake. Then I just have to carefully carry it around.

Threaten David until he is so scared that he’ll hold onto that cake for dear life.
p.s. Tomorrow for my birthday I’m making mini pies!

Minty – I never knew Cake Takers existed! A friend once constructed a cake transportation device out of packing tape and plastic wrap and it was very impressive but… too much effort. I like the springform-foil idea, thanks!
Emily – Sudden image of David awkwardly holding cake with bare hands :x Have fun mini-pieing! Wish I was there!

I stumbled upon your blog from Ravelry ie your bath puff blog post. You have a very interesting blog and I’ll definitely RSS it. :)
P.S. The cake looks delicious!

Oh my god, that looks incredible!!!
A while back I invested in a cake carrier, for schlepping cakes and pies around to my friend’s houses. It was worth the $40 I paid for it, since i usually only make cakes and pies if I’m bringing them somewhere else… I can’t be trusted with a whole cake in my apartment!

I’ve already eaten half of this cake just because only half would fit in the biggest pyrex container I owned… so I too am a danger to unsuspecting cakes and pies everywhere! I’ll shop around and/or experiment with DIY methods next time :)
